I discovered Girum Tewelde through the “birding pals” website and after some correspondence made the decision to use him for this trip. Girum proved to be an excellent bird guide. He has a thorough knowledge of species and where to find them. He is patient and committed to finding the bird. Unlike many guides Girum is particularly careful to ensure minimum impact, using bird calls with real discretion and avoiding intrusive approach. In a country where infrastructure is often minimal, Girum’s excellent organisation ensured that our time was smooth and problem free and he kept a close eye on safety and wellbeing. I was particularly impressed too with his choice of driver who negotiated the difficult roads with great skill. When you spend 16 days birding with someone you have to get on! Girum is a very likeable, easy going bloke and excellent company. This was one of the most memorable trips I have done. Thanks to Girum I saw all my target species (except the Ankober serin where fog made birding impossible). An exceptional guide who I highly recommend.

This was our first trip to Ethiopia,... read more so we were initially a bit apprehensive about traveling in a ‘new’ country with a guide we did not know. But after talking to Girum beforehand on the phone, I was sure our trip was in good hands, And it certainly was! Girum did a superb job of designing our tour, optimizing the birds we found, and finding reasonably priced, but excellent, accommodations.

Girum knew precisely where to go, and where not to go. He designed our travels with both in mind. His driver, Lemma, was a safe and excellent driver, a great guy, and also a fine spotter, The car was comfortable and air conditioned. With the affable duo of Girum and Lemma, we had a wonderful experience, so much so that we are already planning a return to see the parts of Ethiopia we did not see on our first trip.

The diversity of habitats and wide ranges of elevation lead to a wonderfully rich avifauna, and Girum knows where to go - and in some cases whom to contact to find the special local bird. I was thrilled to see a Trogon. We were able to see the rare red wolf and its prey, the giant mole rat.

In addition to wildlife, Girum knows the rich culture and is proud to explain the complex history of this remarkable country. He knows the rich cuisine and where to find the best examples and tastes. He is a superb guide, kind and thoughtful, and a wonderful ambassador for his country.

My recommendation for Girum is unqualified and most enthusiastic. We look forward to another adventure with him.
